Digital Defense: Protect Yourself from Cyber Threats
10/01/2024
In an ever-evolving digital world, it is important to stay informed on all the ways to make your digital life more secure. With instances of cyber-attacks becoming more widespread, it is important that you understand what you can do to keep your money and information safe.
Here are a few tips from Bank of New Hampshire to help keep you safe online:
Establish Passwords
- Use strong passwords, like phrases or song lyrics, so they are hard to guess, but easy for you to remember
- Don’t use the same password for multiple accounts
- Use a password manager and keep track of and generate new passwords
- Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Don’t write your passwords down or share with others
- Use passwords with at least eight characters
- Include a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Watch out for Phishing Scams
Phishing scams use fraudulent emails and websites to trick you into disclosing private account or login information.
- Do not click on links or open any attachments or pop-up screens from sources you are not familiar with, even if it’s from someone you know
- Add spam filters to emails
- Look for inconsistencies in the email, spelling mistakes, any personal information requested and unfamiliar greetings or signatures
Secure your internet connection
- Keep your computers and mobile devices up to date, updating them regularly
- Always protect your home wireless network with a password
- When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, be cautious about what information you are sending over it
- Regularly back up your data
- Use a firewall
