How to Protect Yourself Online
- Choose strong passwords containing at least 8 characters, and at least one each of the following: upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
- Keep contact information with the bank up-to-date to ensure we can contact you quickly if we notice any unexpected activity with your accounts.
- Limit the information you share on Social Media.
- When traveling have your mail held.
- Shred old documents containing personal information.
- Remove all personal information from old mobile devices, computers, and fax machines.
- Keep software, anti-virus protections, firewalls and operating system patches updated.
- Never shared your log in credentials with anyone.
- Do not allow your internet browser to save your user names and passwords for automatic login.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited emails and attachments.
- Only access your personal financial information from a computer or device that you trust and never leave your computer unattended while using online banking.
- If your computer or mobile device is lost or stolen notify BNH as soon as possible so we can help you protect your accounts.
- Monitor your credit report annually, from each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax (1.800.685.1111, www.equifax.com); Experian (1.888.397.3742, www.experian.com) and TransUnion (1.877.322.8228, www.transunion.com).
How to Protect Yourself at an ATM or Gas Station
There are some risks you should be aware of:
- Skimmers are devices that are attached to the card slot of an ATM or gas station pump by criminals to capture your account information and/or your money.
- ATM cameras placed by criminals can capture your keystrokes or account information.
- Muggings can also occur at ATMs.
- Use extra precautions at night, in remote locations and unsecured ATMs.
- Become familiar with the ATMs surroundings and notify someone from the bank if you think something is out of place.
- Avoid counting your money at the ATM.
- Don’t forget to collect, then properly dispose of (shred) any ATM receipts.
- Ensure you take your card with you when your transaction is complete.
- Never loan your ATM/Debit card.
- Never write your PIN on your ATM/Debit card.
- Protect your PIN from prying eyes by shielding it with your other hand as you type.
