Stephens Landscaping Professionals: Sowing the Seeds of Success
12/11/2024
In the heart of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, a humble passion for lawn care has blossomed into a thriving landscaping business at Stephens Landscaping Professionals. Founded by brothers John and Mark, this company has grown from a backyard operation to a respected name in the Lakes Region. Their journey offers insights into entrepreneurship, innovation and the power of community connection.
John and Mark were born and raised in Moultonborough. Their journey began with a simple passion—mowing lawns. John recalls, “I started with mowing my parents’ lawn, and it was just fun.” This simple enjoyment ignited a lifelong passion that would shape the course of his future. In high school, a class project inspired John to create a logo, name a fictitious business and post flyers, which quickly led to real customers and the beginning of Stephens Landscaping.
By 2008, the brothers were taking their first official steps into entrepreneurship. As they gained more clients, the need for formal education became evident. John pursued horticulture and business studies at UNH, while Mark took on the day-to-day operations, demonstrating a natural aptitude for business.
John, with his creative vision, focused on design and construction, while Mark, with his financial acumen, managed the maintenance and operations. This division of labor allowed them to streamline their business and focus on what they did best by running together but in different lanes.
Their approach to business was refreshingly straightforward—build strong client relationships, leverage the latest technology and never shy away from investing in their team and tools. As John puts it, “We want to show up professionally and get the job done efficiently,” focusing on innovation and technology to stay ahead in their field.
A crucial aspect of their business was forming a trusted partnership with Bank of New Hampshire. Chris Walkley, SVP – Commercial Banking Team Leader at BNH, worked with John and Mark to streamline processes, and the Bank’s understanding of the unique challenges faced by small businesses have made a significant difference for Stephens Landscaping. With the Bank’s support, the company has been able to invest in new equipment, expand their team and take on larger projects. “Bank of New Hampshire has been a great, local partner,” John explains. “They’ve helped us navigate the many complexities of running a growing business.”
Stephens Landscaping’s success has allowed them to cultivate a workplace environment that not only creates jobs but provides career paths for local residents. Mark and John emphasize the importance of hiring locally and supporting those who opt for a trade career, offering a viable alternative to traditional higher education. Their commitment to community extends beyond job creation. The company invests in local charities and nonprofits, and in initiatives like a construction club for local students, aiming to inspire a new generation to consider trades as a rewarding career.
With a clear strategy for growth, John and Mark intend to expand Stephens Landscaping’s operations with calculated investments and strategic planning, while maintaining the essence of what makes them unique.
Their advice to budding entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Follow your passion, never stop learning and always do what you say you’re going to do.” This ethos has driven their journey and is at the heart of their business philosophy at Stephens Landscaping.
From mowing their family’s lawn to managing a business with over 100 employees, John and Mark’s story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Through commitment to their roots and steadfast dedication to professional excellence, these brothers continue to make waves in their industry while giving back to the region they call home.
