Employee Spotlight: Leia Fabian’s Journey with Bank of New Hampshire

12/09/2024

At Bank of New Hampshire, we take pride in the unique stories and career paths of our valued team members. Their journeys highlight the supportive and growth-oriented environment we strive to cultivate. In this blog series, we celebrate our employees’ experiences, beginning with Leia Fabian, whose inspiring career trajectory exemplifies dedication, perseverance and the incredible opportunities available at Bank of New Hampshire.

A Career in Banking

Leia’s path to a career in banking wasn’t a straight one. She sought a better work-life balance and, after reconnecting with long-time friend and BNH employee at a career fair, she was drawn to BNH. Having been a customer of the Bank for over 30 years, Leia knew firsthand about BNH’s strong commitment to community support. The transition from customer to employee felt natural, and her decision to apply was reinforced by the Bank’s welcoming culture and values.

From New Beginnings to Leadership

Leia’s journey at BNH began in May 2015, when she joined our Gilford Village office as a Bank Services Representative. Like many, Leia started her career in banking with a steep learning curve. New to the industry and its technology, she faced challenges early on. However, with the patient guidance and support of colleagues, Leia persisted. “I struggled at first,” Leia admits, “but my team was so patient and understanding.”

Her perseverance paid off. Although her progression took longer than usual, Leia’s hard work eventually led to rapid advancement. In the same year, she earned several promotions, taking on increased responsibilities in customer service. The summer of 2021 brought a new opportunity—applying for the role of Assistant Office Manager at the Laconia office. While she did not secure the role initially, her determination and growth did not go unnoticed. A year later, when the position opened again, Jim Glover, a supportive figure throughout her career, encouraged her to reapply. In July 2022, Leia became Assistant Manager, and by May 2023, she had earned the title of Office Manager of the Moultonborough office.

A Lifelong Learner

One of Leia’s proudest accomplishments has been pursuing her bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in leadership, along with a minor in occupational psychology, at the University of New Hampshire. She credits BNH for making this possible. “Going back to school was not something I ever thought I would do,” Leia shares, “but I’m so happy that BNH provided me with the opportunity.” Set to graduate in May of 2025, Leia’s educational journey is a testament to the Bank’s commitment to professional growth and development.

Celebrating Success and Team Spirit

Leia’s time at BNH has been filled with memorable moments and achievements. In 2018, she was humbled to be nominated for Employee of the Year. A year later, in 2019, Leia was awarded 24 High Fives, a testament to her positive contributions to the team. For Leia, the transparency and employee recognition within the Bank are standout features. “I have never worked for a company that celebrates its employees so much while also running its business so transparently,” she says. “Having an enthusiastic Executive Management Team keeps me motivated.”

One Word: Challenging

When asked to describe her career at Bank of New Hampshire in one word, Leia chose challenging. It’s a reflection not only of her early struggles in a new career, but of her continued desire to push herself to grow. “Now I love it because I feel that I am challenging myself to be better or be my best self,” she explains.

Advice for New Talent

For those just starting their careers, Leia offers invaluable advice: “Be patient because there is so much to learn, but don’t worry—BNH employees are so great at support and help. We all basically start in the same place, so there is always someone willing to help you out.” She also emphasizes the rewards of a banking career, particularly the lasting relationships formed with both customers and colleagues. “Banking is a very rewarding career! I love getting to know customers from their first accounts to helping their grandchildren with accounts.”

Leia Fabian’s story is one of resilience, growth, and the power of a supportive workplace. We are proud to have her as part of the Bank of New Hampshire family, and we hope her journey inspires others to embark on their own rewarding careers with us.
