Can You Spot a Scam?

10/16/2025

Every day, thousands of people fall victim to fraudulent emails, texts and calls from scammers pretending to be their bank, a loved one, the government or law enforcement. With the growing use of online and mobile banking, the problem is only getting worse.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, American consumers lost a staggering $12.5 billion to phishing scams and other fraud in 2024—a 25% increase from the prior year.

Why? Because these criminals are really good at what they do. They know how to pressure you, trick you into trusting them and make you act fast. But here’s the good news: you can fight back!

At Bank of New Hampshire, we’re committed to helping you protect yourself. That’s why we’ve joined the American Bankers Association and banks nationwide in the Banks Never Ask That campaign—a movement designed to help you recognize scams quickly and snap out of it before it’s too late.

We want every bank customer to become a scam-spotting pro—and stop these criminals in their tracks. If something feels off, stop, take a breath and trust yourself.

Here are Five Red Flags to Watch For:

Scammers don’t give up, but you don’t have to give in. The more you know, the harder it is for them to succeed.
